SUSTAINABILITY WORK & VISION

CLIMATE - OUR WORK

The well-being of our environment is important to us. Our sustainability work today focus on the climate and our climate work is therefore a natural part of our business. Our priorities are in line with Systembolaget’s long-term sustainability agenda, UN’s Sustainability Development Goals and the Swedish government’s goal of being climate neutral by 2045.

WE ARE A MEMBER OF THE DRINKS INDUSTRY’S CLIMATE INITIATIVE

Since 2018 we are a member of the Drinks Industry’s Climate Initiative; DKI that covers 80% of the total volumes in Systembolaget’s fixed assortment. DKI is a collaborative project that was founded 2017 by Systembolaget, Swedish spirits & wine suppliers association and Swedish breweries’ association. In the initiative, the wine industry’s colleagues participate and work both individually and jointly to reduce our own as well as the entire industry’s climate impact. The members report, measure and follow up their climate impact based on Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG)

WE COMPENSATE FOR OUR EMISSIONS

We compensate 100% for our emissions based on our emissions in the DKI report via climate compensation. Above what has been calculated in DKI for Contemporary Wines we added 9% extra. We support the Bhilwara climate compensation project that contributes both to fossil-free solar energy in the Indian electricity grid and provides socioeconomic benefits to the region’s inhabitants. India is a country with good conditions for solar energy with a majority of sunny days during the year. Despite this, most of the electricity produced in India today comes from coal power. In addition to emitting by far the most carbon dioxide of the major types of energy, carbon also has major negative effects on people and the environment at the local level. In the Bhilwara district of Rajasthan, a solar energy project has been installed with the capacity to produce renewable electricity of up to 9,100 MWh annually. Thanks to fossil-free solar energy, the project prevents emissions of approximately 8,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. Solar energy is one of the types of energy that will probably play a major role in switching to a green and renewable energy network in India.

TRANSPORT AND PACKAGING -
OUR LARGEST SHARE OF OUR EMISSIONS

We are working with our own brands, therefore we can cooperate closely with our partners to influence and inspire each other in our climate work. With our logistic partner we annually discuss and review regarding improvements of our transports in order to reduce our climate footprints by using more environmentally fuels, changing to more environmentally transports, for example from truck to train if possible. We have a constant dialogue with our producers how we can use more climate friendly packaging, covering all from quality and weight of the bottles, Bag-in-boxes and labels in environmentally friendly paper etcetera.

SUSTAINABILITY - A SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY CHAIN

We use the Worldfavor sustainability platform to collect, organize and follow up our producers’ sustainability work. We are mapping the supply chain for our products listed in the fixed assortment at Systembolaget and our producers have signed the Amfori BSCI code of conduct. (Business Social Compliance Initiative) The code is based on international conventions and agreements on human rights and working conditions and is a commitment to conduct business in an ethical and responsible manner. The code is written in Systembolaget's purchase agreement.

In addition to the climate and environmental benefits that solar energy contributes, there are also economic and social benefits of the solar energy project in Bhilwara. Among other things, this has contributed to the healthcare in the village being provided with reliable access to renewable energy around the clock.
